Kisah Empat Puluh Tujuh Ronin Akō rōshi, ronin dari Akō) adalah peristiwa pembalasan dendam 47 ronin dari Akō di bawah pimpinan Ōishi Kuranosuke Yoshitaka yang membalas dendam atas kematian majikan bernama Asano Takumi no Kami dengan cara melakukan penyerbuan ke rumah kediaman pejabat tinggi istana Kira Kōzuke no Suke Yoshihisa dan membunuhnya.

Peristiwa pembunuhan Kira Kōzuke no Suke Yoshihisa dikenal sebagai Genroku Akō jiken (Genroku Akō jiken Peristiwa Akō era Genroku) karena terjadi tanggal 14 bulan 12 tahun ke-15 era Genroku atau 30 Januari 1703

Pada tanggal 14 Maret 1701, Asano Takumi no Kami bertengkar dengan pejabat tinggi (Kōke) bernama Kira Kōzuke no Suke Yoshihisa dan melukainya dengan wakizashi di ruangan bernama Matsu no Ōrōka (tempat berkumpul daimyo) di dalam Istana Edo. Tokugawa Tsuneyoshi yang menjabat Seii Taishogun menjadi sangat marah atas peristiwa penyerangan dengan benda tajam yang terjadi di lingkungan istana dan memerintahkan Asano Takumi no Kami untuk melakukan seppuku pada hari yang sama. Hukuman juga dijatuhkan terhadap keluarga Asano Takumi no Kami (klan Akō Asano) dalam bentuk pencabutan semua wilayah kekuasaan klan Akō Asano di Akō, sehingga para pengikutnya harus menjadi ronin. Kira Kōzuke no Suke Yoshihisa yang juga terlibat dalam peristiwa ini justru tidak mendapat hukuman apa-apa.

Sebagian besar bushi wilayah han Akō dan Ōishi Kuranosuke yang menjabat penasehat utama bagi Asano Takumi no Kami merasa sangat tidak puas dengan keputusan tidak adil yang dijatuhkan pemerintah Bakufu. Hukuman yang dijatuhkan pemerintah Bakufu dianggap melanggar prinsip "kedua belah pihak yang bertengkar harus dihukum" kenka ryōseibai?) yang merupakan hukum kelas samurai. A History Of American Philosphy

In the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth century, people in America known formally as philosophers were part of a wider dialogue that had three major components.
Most important were parish ministers, primarily in New England, who wrote on theology and participated in a conversation that embraced a religious élite in England and Scotland, and later in Germany. These clerics expounded varieties of Calvinist Protestantism. Jonathan Edwards was the most influential and talented member of this ministerial group, which later included Horace Bushnell and Ralph Waldo Emerson. But these two lived at a time when such thinkers were deserting their congregations and turning away from traditional Protestant doctrine. Because these sages were unconnected to institutions of higher education, I have sometimes called them amateurs, although this term embraces a wider collection of individuals, some of whom were less religious, or were on the fringes of the emerging system of advanced academic training in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The second major component of American speculative thought was located in one part of this system, the seminaries that grew up in the Northeast, the old Midwest, and the South throughout the nineteenth century. Often independent entities unconnected to American colleges, these institutions were, aside from law and medical schools, the only places where an aspiring young man could receive instruction beyond what an undergraduate received; they arose to train a professional ministry. The specialists in theology at these centers gradually took over the role that the more erudite ministry had played. Leonard Woods of Andover Theological Seminary; Henry Ware of the Harvard Divinity School; Nathaniel William Taylor of the Yale Divinity School; Charles Hodge of the Princeton Theological Seminary; and Edwards Amasa Park of Andover belong to this cadre.

Buy Jupiter By Isaac Asimov

Buy Jupiter is an excellent collection of short-short and short science fiction stories by the master, Isaac Asimov. The stories begin with 1950's "Darwinian Pool Room" and ends with 1973's "Light Verse." Since most of these stories originally appeared in low-circulation magazines such as Infinity Science Fiction and Satellite Science Fiction, it was not until the publication of this book that even the most diehard science fiction fans got a chance to read them.
If you like Asimov, you'll love Buy Jupiter and other stories. An eclectic mix of his short stories, they range from short-shorts (1-2 pages) to some longer pieces. Given Asimov's prolifity, the quality can be a bit uneven, but his introductory commentary for each story more than makes up for it.
